Trout Fishing The Night Before ThanksGiving

How the hell do you end up in a cold trout steam, wading at night in November, the night before Thanksgiving?....I will give you a few minutes of thought for that answer........

The answer is, " Brown Trout", those nocturnal feeding bastards.....You have to be a little crazy. Not to bright and have a willingness to go out and do things that make absolutely no fucking sense. It also helps if you have friends as crazy as you are. With the same sense of adventure. Or, as some girlfriends might say, "Your stupid ass friends".

So my buddy and I headed towards Springfield, Ohio. Destination, the Mad River. When we arrived, all seemed well. We started to gear up, and it started to drizzle. My buddy asked, "Is that snow?"....and so it goes.....We made our way into the water, under a bridge. Started blind casting, with high hopes of hitting something. We just wanted to feel that weight on the end of our line. You know that one that tells you, "this is no snag".....but being as it was....nothing.....no fish for us on this night....

While fishing, we came upon a bear trap. Yep that's correct, a small trap. Someone had place one in the water, next to a den, maybe a muskrat, I am not sure, but I kicked it and it clicked shut. Scared me to death. Someone had this in the water, under the water. How stupid is that? It was one of the small ones for small game....but I had never seen this in a river before.....jus another adventure.

We moved the trap.....

Cranberry River(Again) W.V. Oct 2009

Oct 21st - 23rd, Cranberry River outing. This was one of those trips that came together at the last moment, and withing a day of saying something like "Let's hit the Cranberry", we were gone.....Good thing to because the weather was great. Really cool at night but great during the day. The river didn't give up any huge trout like it normally does, but it did give up many little fish. Lot's of fun, and the scenery this time of year is awesome. The trees were giving us their best yellows, reds and oranges. I was lucky to be able to go.....What can I say, a late fall trout trip out east for a couple of days. How awesome is that?......

Lousy Fall Fishing

Fall is the second most beautiful time of year. Spring, in my opinion is the most visually pleasing time of year. They say Fall fishing is as good as Spring time fishing. This year, I have to say hogwash. I have been skunked more time this fall then I care to talk about(although I will write about it).

I have been skunked on the Mad River at least 3 times in the last 6 weeks. A couple of small mouth trips and 1 trout outing up north by Urbana. I know a lot has been written about the Mad river, and I read a few great things about the river. I have even pulled a few bass outta that drainage. But more times than not, that river hands me a goose egg. SKUNKED. Great looking river, looks like your gonna do real well, just by looking at it.....not the case........I suppose they named it the Mad River because it makes one so dang Mad........

.....went out carp fishing two days in a row, yesterday, and the day before. Found a spot, pretty secluded, not any signs of human activity....a big open mud flat, bird area, full of carp. I mead full, really full. You could see the bastards swimming around in the shallows, backs and tails outta the water, everywhere....splashing, swimming, cruising around......did not want my worms on the first day...so I got offended. Took it personal, as I always do. Came back the next day with eveil thoughts of slaying them darn carp. Brought the corn, and the doughball, my own secret recipe, that has worked like magic in the past........again Skunked......

Fall fishing???? Maybe I need more practice....

Shavers Fork

Well, what can I say. Fishing sucked. But the weather was perfect. I was with family and friends. So, it was a perfect camping trip. It was beautiful this time of year. I can't express how vibrant the colors of the tree leaves were. So much beauty.....The Monongahela National Forest is Gods country..........I say go fish and have fun. Get outside, travel. Have an adventure. Take a camera....

Ludlow Falls and The Still Water River

Wow, what a day. Got up early this morning to go fishing. The phone rang at almost 6am. My fishing buddy was actually awake and ready to go. So off we went after a good breakfast. ....First stop, the gas station, have to get more coffee and a few protein bars for the road......then off to Ludlow Falls....good thing we headed up that way...cause we got into them pretty good. ...Went down to the falls, started casting crankbaits into the waterfall, and the small mouth were there waiting. I caught two nice smallmouths, and a third that was a bit small. But they hit like freight trains. I thought I was stuck on a rock the first one I hit. It was awesome, My buddy hit 4 and I hit 3. Not bad for a quick stop. ....we then headed up to the stillwater river up in Pleasent Hills Ohio.....Was beautifull, but the fishing sucked. Should have been better. I just couldn't figure out what they wanted. But it was such a good day just to get out.....Was skunked out on the mad last night, pissed me off. that river is almost impossible to figure out. .....but at least today was a good day.

Mad River

Yes, I went out today to hit the smallies. thought it would be a perfect day. I was right, and wrong. It was perfect because I got up at 5am and headed out the door fishing. But the bite was very slow today. I had to work very hard for 5 fish. 2 Spotted bass, 2 smallies, and 1 chub. I had to work very hard to get all those. I did however see many deer, more than I can count. A bunch of bucks and does. It was awesome. I saw a red fox, a beaver, two skunks on the bike path to the river and a few rabbits. ....The day was over cast, should have been a better bite. But the Mad River just isn't all that. I started at the Damn, and headed south, not much good fishable water. Not the kind I wanted at least. Most the water is slack till you hit the spillway south of the damn, below it there were a couple of pockets and that was about it.....found a couple of pockets on the north side of the damn......fished till 12pm.......hard day on the water.

Not Much Action

Well, it's been a slow week for fishing. I have hit three different areas this week, Shawnee Lake, Ceasers Creek, and the Little Miami River. All have been slow. Will try and get a little more serious this Sunday, maybe get out by myself, hit the Mad river..........Hopefully I can get a day thta's overcast, and cloudy. That would help. This week it's been blue bird skies, great for the pool or the beach, not so good for fishing.....yesterday I found out I was not allowed to fish Clifton Gorge, it's a "Nature Preserve"....just that section of the Little Miami(I made a few casts anyway, caught a little smallmouth).....guess they don't want anyone to slay them big ole bass swimming around in there.

Little Miami river - July 5th, 2009

I went on a canoe trip down the Little Miami River on Sunday. We went to Rivers Edge to rent a canoe, Me, My gilrl friend, and my 4 year old. It was awesome, I took a few Rods with me, I figured I could yank a few small mouth outta there. Boy was I right. That stretch down by Ceasers creek is so pretty. The fishing was awesome. I caught many smalllouth, although smalln on my ultralight they were all fun. Very hard to fish from the back of the canoe, while keeping control of the thing. So I had to beach it a few times to fish a few holes the right way......went on a four hour trip that turned into 6 hours cause I had to beach it a lot to fish. Was a great day, and I say to anyone who wants to know, hit the little miami for a fun day of canoeing and fishing, you won't be let down. Just take pleanty of spinners and jigs........go fish.

Cranberry River, West Virginia

I just got back from a Trout Fishing Adventure last week. A friend and I went to WV, to fish the Cranberry River. It was awesome. We hiked into the Back country of the Monongahela National Forest. 10 miles in, that was how far we hiked to camp, sort of. We took bikes this time. So we hiked and peddled our selves in there. We stayed for three days. Camped on the river. Watched all the wild life. Most of all we caught many fish. The trout fishing was the best I have ever experienced anywhere. We slayed them. ....will post more about this trip later.

PIc

6/10/2009 Here is the bass. One hog!!!!!

Biggest Bass 6/10/2009

OK, Here is the scoop. Last night, in Richmond, Indiana, I went out to a pond, trespassing, for a little night bass fishing. This pond is about 3 acres and was beautiful. Perfect night, moon was out giving just enough light to see the water. 3 of us went, they were pitching soft plstics, I started with w jig and pig combo. Then switched to top water, I just had a feeling, so I tied on a jitterbug. Well, I began to slay them. But I also hit a hog. One big pig, awesome at night. Storm was moving in and there was a slight breeze. Them, she hit, I pulled in a huge pregnant female, had to be 6lbs. or more. Probably 23 or 24 inches long, a trophy in this neck of the woods. All at 1:40am 6lbs test. Holy Cow. Check out the pics. next post.

Middle Fork Resevoir 5/24/2009

....Well, I came to visit family and friends for the Memorial day holiday. While I was in town a one of my old fishing buddies wanted to know if I wanted to go fishing.....Well to be honest I called him and said " Let's get'em ", to wich he responded, " OK, Catfish or bass?", I said, " Whatever you think is best.".....This was gonna be a night bassing trip to the local watering hole here in Richmond, Indiana. We didn't head out till after 10pm on his Ranger. Fishing was slow, bass are on the beds, females are deep, still recovering. But the night was perfect, no wind, cool breeze. I caught a few that night, nothing big, threw a crank at them, a beaver bait(reaction innovation), a tube bait, and a skirted twin tail grub on a jig head, all fish hit the jigs. 3 bass by 2am, very slow night, but what the hell it was fun, and I hit the bass and my buddy walked away skunked.......gonna go hit' em again this weekend.

Lake fishing 5/17/2009

Talk about great weather, it is one of those perfect late spring evenings. A cold front has come thru and left the place perfect. Cooler, blue bird skies, lots of sun. I talk the person I am with into driving by this lake, it's a 5 acre pond really. Deep, strip pit. Sits in a metro park with a soccer complex nearby. One side is deep and clear, water hitting jagged rocks, coming out of the water. The other side splashes up next to mature trees, not as deep but awesome looking none the less....To bad I only have a little bit of time.....I grab my rod, and tie on a double tail skirted jig. Kinda a mossy color, been using this color this spring and has been producing lots of fish.....on this evening I pull out to small Large mouth in a matter of 15 minutes. If I was alone, and able to switch up baits I probably could land a few. These post cold front bass are a bit finicky. Not to mention I thing they have spawned, females not bitting. ....Lot's of fun anyways. No way would I complain about a great evening like this. Best part, a group of kids from the soccer park watched as I hit one of the bass and got really excited, and my son was there to see it all. How great is that. Awesome.

Little Miami River 5/12/2009

Wow another good morning on the River. Here is a nice pick of a largemouth I pulled from the river. I also watched a small deer cross right in front of us today. Was great. Blue bird skies, not the best day for fish, but a great day to be fishing.

Went Fishing 5/11/2009

Well, what can I say? I was correct today was a great day for fishing. Now I know, there are no bad days for fishing, just some are better than others. .....I ended up going to John Bryant State Park, to get into The Little Miami River. That ended up being a great choice, although I could not fish as much as I wanted,it ended up being great anyway. I started walking down the trail next to the river and it was stunning. Just as pretty a early spring day can get. I walked past the first couple of holes and fished the third, BAM second cast, I nail a smallmouth. Great fish for this river, a solid 2.5 pounder. Whole lotta fun. .....am going back tomorrow. The weather looks perfect. GO FISH.

Thinking About Getting The Line Wet.

This should make for a fun day. I need to entertain my 4 year old today. Make my girlfriend happy. Go to WalMart, etc. .....and somehow Head out to this a part of the river I have my eye on....It's been raining off and on for about a week. A cold front has come thru, putting a chill on things, some bass have already spawned. Pretty much a shitty time to even think about fishing. But for some reason, I am, and I think I will end up trying to hit a smallmouth, or whatever is in the part of the river I wanna hit. .....I sure hope luck is on my side. Will post later what happens, I will be lucky to even get out there. But I know I can make it happen. The question is, "Can I get a bite?".....well, I will find out. But it's gonna be an adventure just getting out.

Park Pond 5/4/2009

Not much going on out there today. Perfect weather, picture perfect some would say. My 4 year old son and I went out today to catch a few fish. He caught a few bluegills. I caught a couple small bass. But the males are on their nests. So they females have moved deep to recover from laying eggs. Bite was slow. Almost off. Not much to report on.

Wishing I Was Fishing

I didn't have any time to go out fishing this weekend. It rained most of the last few days. Plus, I had to work. My job gets in the way of my fishing time. It sure is a drag. But I may head out tomorrow to a small farm pond and see if I can tear them up.

I will tell ya, I have been using a couple of new jigs/baits this year and have been doing really well. One is the Smallie Beaver bait by reaction Innovations. This is an awesome bait, and they have a crapload of cool color choices to choose from. they other I have been using a lot is from Gary Yamamoto Custom Baits it is their 4" D/T H-Grub(spider jig?). Really awesome as well. Both these baits can be rigged a few different ways, on a jighead, texas rigged, as trailers, or whatever. But they have worked for me in the lakes, and rivers. Check em out.

Thursday, April 30, 2009

Last night(4/29/2009) I went out to a pond, a large 10(est.) acre pond. Next to Westwood lake in Fairborn, Ohio. I showed up at waters edge at 7:20 or there abouts. It had been a little rainy earlier in the day. But the evening was beautiful. Very cool, sunset was awesome. So, I went on down and thru some woods to the pond I wanted to fish, and no one else was there. On the backside of the lake, there are very large rocks coming out from the water. This is and old strip pit. So the water is deep and clear. Not sure if this is park owned or not. Don't really care, I have had my eye on this place for a number of years and don't see people down there. around the pond, lots of ATV tracks and paths. Some debri is scattered here and there, signs of humans about.
I decided to pitch a little beaver bait, brown, green, and black color, on a slider head jig. Turns out this was the trick. I caught several small bass. About 7 in an hour or so, It was awesome. water was perfect, not a ripple anywhere. .......

After some time I knew I had to get outta there and meet my ride which was gonna meet me about a mile back after 9pm........

Adventure Fishing

As I go out fishing, usually in Waders, heading into a stream. I always think to myself, "What kind of adventure will this turn into?". You see, I like to fish. I like to go out and hit the rivers, and streams. I like to hit ponds, lakes, strip pits, honey holes, creeks, and if I am close, even salt water. There is no telling what stuff I can find while out walking the rivers. Some good, some not so good. But going out is always and adventure of sorts. Hence adventure fishing.

I look forward to blogging and getting others to join me in this like minded attempt to share stories, reports, and what not. As long as it is fishing related.
